I think that in the war people did paintings to express their feelings and to express how aweful the war really was. They would usually paint the horrid things like the battles.

Artists would usually paint what they had seen or experianced. It is like a journal to Artists but instead they paint, not write...

I recon that it must of been hard to finish the paintings because of the bombs and gas attacks.
