In the 1st World war the soldiers felt sorry for the horses and had to kill them because they either suffered too much or were half dead. The soldiers did not wan't to do that so they would draw or paint a picture for a grave stone and to appreciate what they had done for their country. 

Drawing a picture or painting of picture of the horse ( a particular horse ) pulling carts, it would remind the soldiers at the end of the war about the suffering of the horses.
