Captain John McCrae was in the South African Boer War. After he became a captain and then a Major. He was then involved in the military until 1914.

 

On the 4th of August 1914 Britain declared war on Germany, as Canada was in the British empire they were then in WWI. In 3 weeks 45,000 Canadians joined up including Captain John McCrae.
